Spring Showers Got You Down? DIY Your Windshield Wiper Fluid in San Diego!

As winter fades and spring showers blossom in San Diego, your car is facing a new battlefield: heavy rain and pollen. While you might have topped off your windshield wiper fluid to tackle the winter snow and salt, chances are it’s running low. Don’t worry about shelling out for expensive store-bought refills – create your own potent wiper fluid at home!

Why DIY?

Making your own wiper fluid is a breeze, saving you money and the environment. Store-bought brands often contain harsh chemicals like methanol, which can be harmful. This DIY recipe uses safer ingredients and is just as effective at cleaning your windshield. Plus, it’s completely customizable – adjust the soap or coloring to your liking!

What You’ll Need:

  • Distilled water (3 liters)
  • Rubbing alcohol (1 ½ cups)
  • Liquid dish soap (¼ cup)
  • Blue food coloring (10 drops, optional)
  • Empty gallon jug with a lid (single-use or reusable)
  • Paint mixing stick or similar tool
  • Funnel

The Mixing Magic:

  1. Cut your jug (optional): If reusing a container, clean it thoroughly. For a single-use jug, cut the top off for easy mixing.
  2. Pour and measure: Fill the jug with distilled water, then add rubbing alcohol and dish soap.
  3. Color it up (optional): Add blue food coloring for easy identification.
  4. Mix it in: Use your paint stick to ensure everything is well blended.
  5. Store it safely: If not using immediately, keep the jug labeled and out of reach of children.

Refill Time:

  1. Pop the hood: Open your car’s hood and secure it with the prop rod.
  2. Find the reservoir: Look for a blue or black lid with the windshield fluid icon (consult your manual if needed).
  3. Unscrew and remove: Place the lid somewhere safe.
  4. Fill it up: Use the funnel to pour your DIY fluid into the reservoir until it reaches the fill line (leave about 2 inches of space).
  5. Close it up: Replace the lid securely and lower the hood.

Bonus Tips:

  • For extra cleaning power, add a tablespoon of white vinegar to the mix.
  • Don’t use this DIY fluid in your car’s washer fluid reservoir if it’s already filled with store-bought fluid – they might not mix well.
